It's two in the morning. You told yourself one more round an hour ago. The screen glows, your eyes ache, and some quiet part of your brain knows you should sleep. But your hands keep moving. Here's the strange thing about that moment: nobody is making you do this. There's no test tomorrow on level seventeen. No boss is checking your kill-death ratio. The game has no power over you at all, except one — it is really, really fun. And that word, fun, is about to get a lot more interesting. Because in a game, fun is not a happy accident. Somebody decided exactly how heavy your sword should feel, how often a chest should appear, how close that last enemy should come to killing you. Fun was engineered, on purpose, by people who think about enjoyment the way a bridge engineer thinks about steel. This whole course is about those people and their craft. So let's start at the deep end. What, actually, is fun — and how do you build it?

1. Fun Is Weirdly Hard to Pin Down

Everyone knows fun until you ask them to define it.

We treat fun as obvious, but the moment you try to describe what makes something fun, it slips away.
