Here's an uncomfortable thing to start with. The smartest person you know — the one who aces tests, wins every debate, reads everything — is not safe from being fooled. In some ways they're the easiest target of all. Because here's the catch: a sharp mind is also a brilliant lawyer. Give it a conclusion it already wants to believe, and it will build a flawless case for it, dismiss the evidence against it, and walk away more certain than ever. That's not a knock on intelligence. It's a clue about how the human mind actually works. Over this course, we're going to take your reasoning apart gently and look at the gears, not to make anyone feel stupid, but because almost everything that fools us fools us in the same predictable ways. The first thing to unlearn is the comforting idea that being clever is a force field. It isn't. Rationality — actually getting to the truth — is a separate skill.
