- Family — the people who live at home with you
- School community — teachers, students, staff

- Country — all the people sharing a nation

Long ago, humans realized they were much stronger living together than living alone.
- Ancient humans lived in small tribes and groups
- People built villages near rivers for water and food
- Towns grew around markets and trade
- Cities formed as more people gathered together
- Today communities connect around the world!

Communities work when people follow rules, help each other, and take care of shared spaces.
- Rules and laws keep everyone safe and fair

Amazing people in every community have special jobs that help everyone stay safe and healthy.
- Firefighters — put out fires and rescue people
- Doctors and nurses — keep us healthy
- Teachers — help us learn and grow
- Police officers — keep communities safe
- Librarians, bus drivers, and farmers too!
8. City vs. Country Communities
Communities can be busy and big, or quiet and small — each kind has wonderful things about it!

Communities help provide both the things we need and some of the things we want.
10. Things That Can Hurt a Community
Communities become unhappy when people are unkind, unfair, or do not look out for each other.
- Leaving people out or being unkind
- Not following rules that keep everyone safe

- Thinking only of yourself and not others
11. How You Can Help Your Community
Even young people can do big things to make their community a better place!
- Pick up litter at school or in the park
- Help a neighbor carry something heavy
- Include someone who is left out at recess
- Say thank you to community helpers
- Donate toys or books you no longer need
12. Draw Your Community Map
Draw a map of your neighborhood and label all the important community places!
- Draw your house or apartment building
- Add your school and any parks nearby
- Include a shop or market your family visits
