▸ Read the full class — Why We Make Art

Guess what? You have been making art your whole life! Every drawing, every painting, every time you arranged blocks into something cool — that was art. Today we are going to find out why making art is one of the most amazing things humans do!

1. Why Art Matters

Art helps us share feelings and ideas that are sometimes too big for words.

  • Art shares how we feel inside
  • Art makes the world more beautiful
  • Art tells stories without words
  • Art connects people together

2. What Is Art?

Art is anything you make to express yourself — drawings, paintings, sculptures, and more.

  • Drawing with pencils or crayons
  • Painting with colors
  • Making sculptures from clay
  • Collages from cut paper
  • Digital art on a tablet

3. Art Has Always Been Around

Humans have been making art for over 40,000 years — it is one of the oldest things we do!

  • Cave paintings — 40,000 years ago!
  • Ancient Egyptian art — 3,000 years ago
  • Renaissance masters like Leonardo da Vinci
  • Modern artists like Picasso and Frida Kahlo
  • You — making art right now!

4. How Art Is Made

Artists use colors, shapes, and lines to create pictures that tell a story.

  • Lines make shapes and outlines
  • Colors show feelings and energy
  • Shapes fill in pictures
  • Texture makes things look rough or soft

5. Art Principles

Great artists think about a few simple ideas to make their art look wonderful.

  • Color — warm and cool colors
  • Line — thick, thin, curved, or straight
  • Shape — circles, squares, triangles
  • Space — what you leave empty matters too
  • Pattern — repeating shapes and colors

6. Art Tools

Artists use all kinds of fun tools to make their creations come to life.

  • Pencils — for sketching and drawing
  • Paintbrushes — for painting
  • Crayons and markers — for color
  • Clay — for sculpting 3D shapes
  • Scissors and glue — for collage

7. Famous Art and Artists

Some artists became very famous by finding their own special style.

  • Picasso — fun, wild shapes and faces
  • Frida Kahlo — bold, colorful self-portraits
  • Monet — soft, dreamy water paintings
  • Van Gogh — swirly, bright night skies
  • Warhol — pop art with bright repeated images

8. Drawing vs. Painting

Both drawing and painting are wonderful — they just feel a little different!

9. Realistic vs. Abstract Art

Some art looks like real things, and some art uses shapes and colors to show feelings.

10. Art Mistakes (That Are Actually Okay!)

Every artist makes mistakes — the secret is to keep going and have fun!

  • Thinking your art has to be perfect
  • Copying exactly instead of trying your own style
  • Giving up when it looks tricky
  • Using only one color when more would be fun

11. Making Art Every Day

The best way to get better at art is to draw or paint a little bit every single day.

  • Keep a small sketchbook nearby
  • Draw things you see around you
  • Try a new color or shape each day
  • Look at art in books and museums
  • Share your art with friends and family

12. Draw Your Happy Place

Draw a picture of your favorite place in the world using your favorite colors.

  • Think of a place that makes you happy
  • Sketch the outline first with a pencil
  • Add colors that match how it feels
  • Add small details that make it yours
  • Give your picture a title!

13. What We Learned

Art is for everyone — you can express your feelings, tell stories, and make the world more beautiful!

  • Art shares feelings and ideas
  • Humans have made art for 40,000 years
  • Lines, shapes, and colors are the building blocks
  • Famous artists like Picasso and Frida Kahlo had their own style
  • Practice a little every day!
