An off-grid system is an energy account. Every hour the sun pays in and your loads withdraw; the battery is the balance that carries you from one sunny day to the next.
Panels are rated in watts — how fast they earn in full sun. But sizing is really about watt-hours: how much energy you gather over a day, and how much the bank can hold.
The number that saves you in bad weather is autonomy — battery capacity divided by daily load, the days the bank alone can run the house. When a storm kills generation for three days, panels earn almost nothing; only stored days keep the fridge cold.
That is the brutal asymmetry of off-grid power: panels are cheap and get cheaper, but autonomy — stacking enough battery, or trimming the loads — is what actually rides out the dark.
