The Great Number Balance

Field notes Balance scales are the oldest weighing tool we know — Ancient Egyptians hung goods on one side and stone weights on the other, four thousand years ago. The heavier side always goes down, just like a seesaw. When both sides push down exactly as hard, the beam rests level — that is what the equals sign really means. And a weight hung farther from the middle pushes harder, which is why a small child far out on a seesaw can lift a big one sitting close.
