The sociologist Mark Granovetter argued that whether a riot, strike, or movement catches fire depends less on how angry people are than on the distribution of their thresholds — the number of others each person needs to see acting before they will act too.
One stubborn person with a high threshold can block a chain; one radical with a threshold of zero can start one. Shift a single threshold and a crowd that would have stayed silent can tip all the way over — a cascade hiding inside the same grievances.
It also depends on who can see whom. When people only watch their neighbors, a movement must physically spread cell by cell. Raise the visibility — mass media, a feed — and a small committed minority the whole society can see may ignite it at once.
The dashed marker is the mean-field prediction: where a crowd that could all see each other would settle. Turn visibility up and the real square meets it; turn it down and local structure takes over.
