Yet as you raise the prey's growth rate, a steady boom-bust cycle first splits in two (a two-year cycle), then four, then shatters into chaos: cycles that never quite repeat. This is the paradox of enrichment — a more productive ecosystem is often a less predictable one.
In 1976 Robert May showed that even the simplest population equations can be chaotic. The pale ghost orbit is a second ecosystem started 0.001% apart from yours; in the steady regime it stays glued to you, but in chaos it peels away — sensitive dependence on initial conditions. That is why a fully deterministic ecosystem can still be impossible to forecast for long.
